How to Plan a Surprise Proposal in Old San Juan
Planning a surprise proposal in Old San Juan? Get practical advice on locations, timing, privacy, and discreet photography from a Puerto Rico photographer.
Suggested lead photograph: an actual Old San Juan proposal, followed by a reaction photograph and portraits showing the setting.
A young man kneels in front of his bride-to-be as she is surprised in Old San Juan
You can already imagine the moment: the two of you walking through Old San Juan, a beautiful view, and a question that will become part of your family's story.
But choosing the exact spot brings a few more questions. Will it be crowded? What time should you arrive? How do you have a photographer there without giving away the surprise?
As a proposal photographer based in Puerto Rico, I help couples turn those questions into a clear plan. Old San Juan offers colorful streets, historic architecture, and views of the water, but the right setting depends on the experience you want to share.
Here is how I would approach planning your surprise proposal in Old San Juan.
A man kneels in front of his fiancee.
Choose the experience before choosing the spot
Before looking for the prettiest background, think about your partner.
Would they enjoy a proposal with people nearby, or would they feel more comfortable somewhere quieter? Do they love the ocean, historic streets, or the idea of a slow walk together before dinner?
Your answer helps us choose a setting that feels natural for both of you. It also helps us build a believable reason for being there, so the proposal feels like part of your time together rather than an unexpected detour.
Where to propose in Old San Juan
El Morro's surrounding grounds: open views and a historic setting
A couple striking a pose in front of El Morro
The open grounds around El Morro are worth considering if you love expansive views and want Old San Juan's history to be part of the photographs.
The important detail is choosing the precise position. A beautiful background alone does not tell us where you should stand, how your partner will approach, or where I can photograph the moment discreetly.
We also need to account for other visitors, wind, and the walking involved. Open space does not guarantee privacy.
Before committing to a spot within San Juan National Historic Site, we should check current access and any requirements that apply to the proposal or photography. The National Park Service's permit information is the place to start.
Paseo de la Princesa: a proposal during a walk together
A couple kisses under the trees in Paseo La Princesa
If you imagine the proposal happening during a relaxed stroll, Paseo de la Princesa may suit the experience you have in mind. The promenade offers a different feel from the streets higher in the old city, with historic surroundings and views toward San Juan Bay.
It can work well with a simple plan: enjoy a walk together, pause at an agreed spot, and let the moment happen.
Because it is a public promenade, we should choose the timing and exact area thoughtfully. A spot that looks quiet in a photograph may feel different when you arrive.
The colorful streets: a proposal woven into exploring the city
A beautiful couple walking on the colorful streets of Old San Juan
For someone who loves architecture and the character of Old San Juan, a street setting can feel personal and charming.
The challenge is finding a place where you can pause comfortably without blocking a doorway or interrupting people walking through. We also need a clear view for the photographs and enough room for your partner's reaction.
Sometimes a street works better for portraits after the proposal. You can have the question itself in a more open setting, then enjoy the colorful city together once the secret is out.
What is the best time to propose in Old San Juan?
A couple smiles under the sunset sky in Old San Juan
I would choose the time based on your location, your plans, and how much privacy matters to you.
Early morning is worth considering if you are comfortable starting the day early and want to explore before the city becomes busier. It can give us more flexibility, although no public location comes with a promise of being empty.
Late afternoon can fit naturally into an evening together, especially if you have dinner plans afterward. We need to allow time for the proposal, a little space to celebrate, and portraits before we lose the light we want.
The best light also depends on the precise setting. A street between buildings and an open waterfront area will not photograph the same way at the same hour.
Rather than choosing a generic sunset time, we will work backward from the location and the experience you want.
Keep the surprise with a simple, believable plan
A man kneels in front of his woman to propose in Old San Juan
A proposal does not need an elaborate cover story. A walk before dinner or an afternoon exploring Old San Juan may be all the explanation you need.
Before the day, we will agree on:
The exact location and a reference you can recognize.
Your route and arrival time.
Where you will pause and how you will be positioned.
How we will communicate discreetly.
An alternative if the original spot is crowded or conditions change.
Depending on the setting, I can blend in with visitors or photograph from a distance. The aim is for you to recognize where to go without having to search for me or manage the photography in the middle of the moment.
Once you are there, you should be able to focus on your partner.
Leave breathing room for getting there
A woman shows her engagement ring against the backdrop of Old San Juan
A proposal plan should include more than the moment you get down on one knee.
Allow time for the journey, parking or drop-off, and walking to the chosen location. If your partner will be wearing dress shoes, or if either of you has mobility concerns, tell me beforehand so we can choose a comfortable route.
Keep dinner reservations far enough afterward that a delay does not leave you rushing. You deserve time to enjoy what just happened.
Have an alternative for weather and crowds
A man kneels in front of his lady on a deck in Old San Juan
For an outdoor proposal, flexibility is part of the preparation.
We can discuss another nearby setting, an adjustment to the time, or a different approach if conditions affect the original plan. If a sheltered or private location is part of that alternative, access needs to be confirmed beforehand.
The goal is to make those decisions together before you are standing there with a ring in your pocket.
After the yes, take a moment together
A couple smiling and hugging in front of La Rogativa
There is no need to turn immediately toward the camera.
The hug, the laughter, the look at the ring, and the words you share deserve room to happen. I will photograph those moments and then guide you through relaxed portraits when you are ready.
Old San Juan gives us opportunities to create variety afterward, but we do not need to visit every landmark. A thoughtful route leaves more room for you to enjoy being newly engaged.
A few questions you may have
A couple showing an engagement ring after proposing against a watchtower
Can you help if I have never visited Old San Juan?
Yes. Tell me where you are staying, your date, and what you imagine. I can help narrow down the setting and explain the route, timing, and plan before you arrive.
Can I have a private proposal in Old San Juan?
We can plan for a quieter setting and time, but public spaces cannot guarantee privacy. If being alone is essential, tell me early so we can discuss a private setting and its arrangements.
Should I choose Old San Juan or a beach?
Old San Juan is worth considering if you love architecture, history, and the idea of exploring together. A beach may suit you better if the ocean and a simpler natural setting are central to your vision. We can talk through both before you decide.
Do I need to know the exact spot before contacting you?
No. You can reach out with an idea, a few possibilities, or simply a date. Choosing the setting is something we can work on together.

Puerto Rico Wedding Venues I Love
Puerto Rico has become one of the most requested destination wedding spots in the Caribbean — no passport required for U.S. guests, a short flight from most East Coast cities, and a backdrop that ranges from colonial cobblestone streets to rainforest waterfalls to postcard-blue water. Over the years I've had the privilege of working weddings at a handful of the island's best-loved venues. Here's an inside look at each one, along with a few thoughts on which couples they suit best.

Old San Juan
For couples who want history and romance in equal measure, nothing beats Old San Juan. Four hundred years of Spanish colonial architecture, pastel facades, and centuries-old forts make it one of the most photogenic backdrops in the Caribbean. Ceremonies here tend to happen in small chapels, private courtyards, or rooftop venues overlooking the bay, with the reception moving to one of the neighborhood's restored mansions or boutique hotels. It's the best choice for couples who want a "we got married in a European city" feeling without leaving the island — and for guests, there's no shortage of restaurants, rum bars, and beaches to fill out a long weekend.
Best for: couples who want architecture and walkability, and guests who plan to turn the wedding into a mini-vacation.
Matai and Toni-Ann at Hacienda Siesta Alegre, overlooking El Yunque in Puerto Rico
Hacienda Siesta Alegre
Tucked into the foothills of El Yunque rainforest in Río Grande, Hacienda Siesta Alegre is a Spanish Colonial-style estate that's become one of the island's signature wedding venues. Open-air terraces, gardens, a famous arched footbridge, and views of the Central Mountain Range give it a storybook quality that photographs beautifully in any light. The whole property is exclusive to one wedding at a time, which means no crowds and no split attention from the staff. It comfortably handles anything from an intimate ceremony to a 200-guest celebration, and the "house without walls" design keeps the trade winds flowing through the reception all night.
Best for: couples who want a lush, garden-and-mountain setting with real privacy on their day.
Leif and Melanie get married in the Windham Grand Rio Mar in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico
Wyndham Grand Rio Mar
Also in Río Grande and sitting on 500 oceanfront acres between El Yunque and a mile of secluded beach, the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar is built for couples who want a full resort experience for themselves and their guests. Between the Ocean Terrace, Vista Verde Garden, a wedding gazebo, and the beachfront event lawn, there's an outdoor option for nearly any style of ceremony, and the Rio Mar Ballroom can host a reception for up to a couple thousand guests if you're planning something big. Because it's a full resort with golf, a casino, and multiple restaurants, it's an easy sell for guests who are flying in and want things to do beyond the wedding itself.
Best for: larger guest lists, couples who want beach and ballroom in one property, and out-of-town guests who want resort amenities on tap.
Ana and David pose on Palomino Island, Puerto Rico
Palomino Island (El Conquistador Resort)
For something genuinely unique, Palomino Island is hard to beat. It's a private, 100-acre island reserved for guests of the El Conquistador Resort in Fajardo, reachable by a short ferry ride from the resort's marina. White sand, turtles in the shallows, and total seclusion make it feel like you've chartered your own island for the day — because, for a few hours, you basically have. The logistics take more coordination than a standard ballroom wedding (guests, vendors, and gear all have to make the ferry crossing), but the payoff is a wedding album that looks like nothing else.
Best for: couples who want a genuine "private island" moment and don't mind a little extra logistics for it.
An iconic spot at Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve, Puerto Rico
Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve (Coco Beach)
Coco Beach in Río Grande sits on 745 acres of Puerto Rican coastline between San Juan and El Yunque, with golf-course lawns, an oceanfront clubhouse, and a beach ceremony backdrop all on one property. Renting the venue typically means the whole space is yours for the day, and the layout works well for a classic sequence of an outdoor ceremony, cocktail hour on the terrace, and an indoor reception if weather turns. It's a slightly quieter, more low-key alternative to the bigger resorts nearby, while still being close enough to San Juan for guests who want to explore the city too.
Best for: couples who want a private, all-in-one golf-and-beach property without the scale of a mega-resort.
Aubrey and Carson at Combate, Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico
Your Favorite Local Beach
You don't have to book a destination venue to get a beach wedding in Puerto Rico — sometimes the best option is simply the beach nearest to where you and your guests are already staying. If privacy matters most, look for a quieter, less-trafficked stretch of coastline rather than a busy public beach, so you're not sharing your ceremony with sunbathers and beach vendors. If convenience matters most, the beach directly in front of your hotel is hard to beat: no caravanning guests anywhere, no permit logistics beyond what the hotel handles, and everyone can walk from their room to the ceremony in flip-flops and be back at the pool an hour later. I always tell couples to think about it in that order — privacy first, then proximity — and pick whichever tradeoff fits the day you're picturing. (A quick note: public beaches in Puerto Rico require a permit for a ceremony, so if you're not on hotel property, build a little extra time into your planning for that paperwork.)
Best for: couples who want an easy, no-fuss beach ceremony built around wherever they're already staying, rather than traveling to a separate venue.
Rikita and Shawquan get married at their Airbnb in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico
Your Rented Airbnb — For Small, Fly-In Weddings
For couples with a small guest list where everyone is flying in from out of town, I've worked several weddings held at a rented Airbnb instead of a hotel or traditional venue. It's a great option when you want the whole group under one roof for the weekend rather than scattered across hotel rooms — breakfast together the morning of, the ceremony in the backyard or on a terrace, and no clock ticking on a rented ballroom. It won't fit a 150-person guest list, but for a micro-wedding of family and close friends, having the entire trip centered on one home tends to make the weekend feel more like a reunion than an event. If you're considering this route, look for a property with enough outdoor space for both the ceremony and a small reception, and confirm with the owner ahead of time that events are actually allowed — not every listing permits them.
Planning a Puerto Rico wedding and want to talk through which of these fits your guest list, budget, and vibe? Get in touch — I'd love to help you figure out the right spot.
A Last-Minute Proposal at Faro Los Morrillos | Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico Engagement Photographer
When Craig's photographer bailed the night before the proposal, he did what any determined partner in crime would do — he found a new one. Less than 24 hours later, we were at Faro Los Morrillos in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, with the Caribbean at our backs and the best kind of secret between us. Jenn had no idea. Until she did.
When the Plan Falls Apart — and Everything Still Goes Right
It started with a text message the night before.
Craig reached out in a bit of a panic — the photographer he had booked for the proposal had just bailed on him. Less than 24 hours before the moment he had planned for Jenn. He needed someone he could trust, someone who could move fast, and someone who could pull it off without Jenn ever suspecting a thing.
That's exactly the kind of call I live for.
We talked quickly, mapped out a loose plan, and I packed my gear. The destination: Faro Los Morrillos, the iconic lighthouse at the southwestern tip of Puerto Rico, perched above dramatic cliffs and facing the open Caribbean. If you're going to ask someone to spend the rest of your life with you, you could do a lot worse than that.
The Setup
The thing about surprise proposals is that the best ones feel completely natural — like you just happened to end up somewhere beautiful together. Craig had that part figured out. He knew Jenn. He knew the place he wanted. What he needed was someone behind the camera who could blend into the background, stay out of the way, and still capture every single second when it mattered.
That's where I come in. Not just as a photographer — as a partner in crime.
We scouted the area quietly. The late afternoon light was already doing something magical over the water, and the clouds rolling in gave the sky that dramatic, moody quality that makes Puerto Rico's west coast so photogenic. Everything was in place.
The Moment
Craig had a custom engraved ring box — Jenn. Craig. 4-23-26 — and when he got down on one knee with the Caribbean stretching out behind them, it was everything.
She said yes.
The hug that followed was the kind that tells you everything you need to know about two people. Pure joy, completely unguarded. That's the shot that I'll always remember from that evening.
After the Yes
Once the tears and the laughter settled, we had the most beautiful golden hour light I could have asked for. Jenn and Craig were completely in the moment — relaxed, happy, fully themselves. That's when the real magic happens in front of a camera. No posing needed. Just two people who just decided to choose each other, standing at the edge of the world.
We moved through the lighthouse grounds, the cliffside overlook, and finished as the sun dropped into the water behind them — silhouettes, stolen kisses, and a ring that caught the last light perfectly.
A Note on Last-Minute Magic
I want to say something to anyone reading this who might be in Craig's position someday — scrambling to find a photographer at the last minute because something fell through.
Don't panic. Call someone who actually cares about your story.
The best sessions I've ever shot weren't the ones that were planned to the minute. They were the ones where the couple trusted me, we leaned into the moment together, and something real happened. Craig and Jenn's evening at Los Morrillos is now one of my favorites — and it almost didn't happen at all.
That's the job I love. Showing up, being your creative accomplice, and making sure nothing is missed.
Craig & Jenn — congratulations. Cabo Rojo witnessed your yes, and I got to be there for it. I can't wait to see what comes next.

Old San Juan Elopement Session in Puerto Rico | Jess & Blue

Jess and Blue were already married when they arrived in Puerto Rico. Their ceremony had taken place at home, intimate and personal. Traveling immediately afterward, they chose Old San Juan to celebrate their marriage with a professional elopement-style photo session—one that felt intentional, elegant, and true to who they are.
Old San Juan offered the perfect setting. Cobblestone streets, historic walls, and open views of the Atlantic created a timeless backdrop that required no embellishment. Dressed with purpose, Jess and Blue moved through the city as if it were an extension of their story—confident, grounded, and deeply connected.
Old San Juan ofrecía el escenario perfecto.
We planned the session around sunset, letting the light guide the rhythm. As the day softened, the session unfolded naturally. The chemistry between us made everything feel effortless. Nothing was rushed. Nothing was forced. Every image grew out of real moments—shared glances, quiet laughter, and stillness.
This is what elopement photography in Old San Juan does best. It creates space. Space to breathe, to reflect, and to honor the beginning of a marriage without distractions.
Jess and Blue didn’t just take photos in Puerto Rico. They marked a moment in their lives with intention—and left with images that feel as meaningful as the commitment they made.

A perfect engagement ring for the perfect occasion
Planning a Surprise Proposal in Cabo Rojo
The person who contacted me wasn’t the groom—it was his sister.
She wanted to help create something meaningful and personal for her brother and his partner. The bride had no idea what was coming, which meant every detail mattered. We talked through several locations across the southwest coast of Puerto Rico before choosing Playa Combate, a beach known for its open views, soft light, and calm energy.
Once the location was set, we focused on the execution.
We chose the exact spot for the proposal, planned where I would be hidden, and agreed on one simple cue. When the time came, the groom would gently turn her toward the ocean—just enough for me to capture her face.
Then we waited.
The surprise and the “yes!”
The Moment She Said Yes
Hidden between trees and bushes, I watched as the moment unfolded.
When he dropped to one knee, her reaction was immediate and real—pure surprise, emotion, joy. These are the moments you don’t direct. You simply witness them.
She laughed. She cried. She said yes.
And everything after that felt lighter.
The happy hug, the happy eyes
After the Proposal at Playa Combate
Once the proposal was over, we let the moment continue naturally.
They walked along the shore, held each other as the sun lowered, and soaked in what had just happened. The sky reflected off the water, giving us one of those soft Cabo Rojo sunsets that make Playa Combate such a beautiful place for proposals and engagement photos.
Nothing was rushed. Nothing was forced.
Just two people, newly engaged, in one of the most peaceful corners of Puerto Rico.
The attention is on the ring
Why Playa Combate Is Ideal for Proposals in Puerto Rico
Playa Combate is one of my favorite locations for surprise proposals because it offers:
Open space and privacy
Beautiful natural light near sunset
A relaxed atmosphere, even on busy days
For couples planning a surprise proposal in Puerto Rico, it allows room to plan quietly while still feeling intimate.
A playful, passionate moment
A Thought on Photographing Proposals
Being a Puerto Rico proposal photographer isn’t just about showing up with a camera. It’s about anticipation, discretion, and respect for the moment.
There are no second chances with proposals. My role is to stay invisible, ready, and fully present—so the story is preserved exactly as it happened.
A tender, joyful hug
