Four hundred years of Spanish colonial architecture, pastel facades, and centuries-old forts make it one of the most photogenic backdrops in the Caribbean. Ceremonies here tend to happen in small chapels, private courtyards, or rooftop venues overlooking the bay, with the reception moving to one of the neighborhood's restored mansions or boutique hotels. It's the best choice for couples who want a "we got married in a European city" feeling without leaving the island — and for guests, there's no shortage of restaurants, rum bars, and beaches to fill out a long weekend.

It's a private, 100-acre island reserved for guests of the El Conquistador Resort in Fajardo, reachable by a short ferry ride from the resort's marina. White sand, turtles in the shallows, and total seclusion make it feel like you've chartered your own island for the day — because, for a few hours, you basically have. The logistics take more coordination than a standard ballroom wedding (guests, vendors, and gear all have to make the ferry crossing), but the payoff is a wedding album that looks like nothing else.

Renting the venue typically means the whole space is yours for the day, and the layout works well for a classic sequence of an outdoor ceremony, cocktail hour on the terrace, and an indoor reception if weather turns. It's a slightly quieter, more low-key alternative to the bigger resorts nearby, while still being close enough to San Juan for guests who want to explore the city too.

Best for: couples who want a private, all-in-one golf-and-beach property without the scale of a mega-resort.

Your Favorite Local Beach

You don't have to book a destination venue to get a beach wedding in Puerto Rico — sometimes the best option is simply the beach nearest to where you and your guests are already staying. If privacy matters most, look for a quieter, less-trafficked stretch of coastline rather than a busy public beach, so you're not sharing your ceremony with sunbathers and beach vendors. If convenience matters most, the beach directly in front of your hotel is hard to beat: no caravanning guests anywhere, no permit logistics beyond what the hotel handles, and everyone can walk from their room to the ceremony in flip-flops and be back at the pool an hour later. I always tell couples to think about it in that order — privacy first, then proximity — and pick whichever tradeoff fits the day you're picturing. (A quick note: public beaches in Puerto Rico require a permit for a ceremony, so if you're not on hotel property, build a little extra time into your planning for that paperwork.)

Your Rented Airbnb — For Small, Fly-In Weddings

For couples with a small guest list where everyone is flying in from out of town, I've worked several weddings held at a rented Airbnb instead of a hotel or traditional venue. It's a great option when you want the whole group under one roof for the weekend rather than scattered across hotel rooms — breakfast together the morning of, the ceremony in the backyard or on a terrace, and no clock ticking on a rented ballroom. It won't fit a 150-person guest list, but for a micro-wedding of family and close friends, having the entire trip centered on one home tends to make the weekend feel more like a reunion than an event. If you're considering this route, look for a property with enough outdoor space for both the ceremony and a small reception, and confirm with the owner ahead of time that events are actually allowed — not every listing permits them.

When the Plan Falls Apart — and Everything Still Goes Right

It started with a text message the night before.

Craig reached out in a bit of a panic — the photographer he had booked for the proposal had just bailed on him. Less than 24 hours before the moment he had planned for Jenn. He needed someone he could trust, someone who could move fast, and someone who could pull it off without Jenn ever suspecting a thing.

That's exactly the kind of call I live for.

We talked quickly, mapped out a loose plan, and I packed my gear. The destination: Faro Los Morrillos, the iconic lighthouse at the southwestern tip of Puerto Rico, perched above dramatic cliffs and facing the open Caribbean. If you're going to ask someone to spend the rest of your life with you, you could do a lot worse than that.

The Setup

The thing about surprise proposals is that the best ones feel completely natural — like you just happened to end up somewhere beautiful together. Craig had that part figured out. He knew Jenn. He knew the place he wanted. What he needed was someone behind the camera who could blend into the background, stay out of the way, and still capture every single second when it mattered.

That's where I come in. Not just as a photographer — as a partner in crime.

We scouted the area quietly. The late afternoon light was already doing something magical over the water, and the clouds rolling in gave the sky that dramatic, moody quality that makes Puerto Rico's west coast so photogenic. Everything was in place.

The Moment

Craig had a custom engraved ring box — Jenn. Craig. 4-23-26 — and when he got down on one knee with the Caribbean stretching out behind them, it was everything.

She said yes.

The hug that followed was the kind that tells you everything you need to know about two people. Pure joy, completely unguarded. That's the shot that I'll always remember from that evening.

After the Yes

Once the tears and the laughter settled, we had the most beautiful golden hour light I could have asked for. Jenn and Craig were completely in the moment — relaxed, happy, fully themselves. That's when the real magic happens in front of a camera. No posing needed. Just two people who just decided to choose each other, standing at the edge of the world.

We moved through the lighthouse grounds, the cliffside overlook, and finished as the sun dropped into the water behind them — silhouettes, stolen kisses, and a ring that caught the last light perfectly.

A Note on Last-Minute Magic

I want to say something to anyone reading this who might be in Craig's position someday — scrambling to find a photographer at the last minute because something fell through.

Don't panic. Call someone who actually cares about your story.

The best sessions I've ever shot weren't the ones that were planned to the minute. They were the ones where the couple trusted me, we leaned into the moment together, and something real happened. Craig and Jenn's evening at Los Morrillos is now one of my favorites — and it almost didn't happen at all.

The person who contacted me wasn’t the groom—it was his sister.

She wanted to help create something meaningful and personal for her brother and his partner. The bride had no idea what was coming, which meant every detail mattered. We talked through several locations across the southwest coast of Puerto Rico before choosing Playa Combate, a beach known for its open views, soft light, and calm energy.

Once the location was set, we focused on the execution.

We chose the exact spot for the proposal, planned where I would be hidden, and agreed on one simple cue. When the time came, the groom would gently turn her toward the ocean—just enough for me to capture her face.

Then we waited.
